In September 2019, Governor Gavin Newson signed a new employment law which will give some freelancers exemptions while leaving others out to dry. The law requires most companies to reclassify contract, freelance, and contingent workers — the backbone of the gig economy —as full-time employees eligible for benefits, a guaranteed $12 state minimum wage and protections under state employment laws.
